Vorwort auf Deutsch

From the preface by Karin Guerttler:

"... it is mostly thanks to < Erwin Potitt> that Montreal's German Theatre has been sustained, that year after year it presents at least two new productions, attracting to the Centaur Theatre an average attendance of 1 000. Since 1978 there has been an annual trans-Canada tour, with performances in Ottawa, Toronto, Kitchener-Waterloo, Winnipeg, Regina, Calgary, Edmonton, and Vancouver. Fiscal grants from the Federal Repuglic of Germany, for the advancement of German language and culture, and private donations support the German Theatre financially. Erwin Pottitt's most serious concern is its continuity. The present core of actors is advancing in age. There is no significant reinforcement through German immigration, and the post-war Berman immigrant's offsprings have rarely mastered their parents' native tongue. The very limited number of younger people eligible for active membership is understandably preoccupied with securing a livelihood, for implicitly an amateur theatre offers no remuneration. Another problem is the public's level of expectations. The German element in Montreal is likewise growing older, and most of its members would not be receptive to experimental presentations. The proven recipe for pleasing such audiences is a balanced program of light and appealing fare, of classical plays from the 18th and 19th centuries and of successful modern dramas. Expensive productions are out of the question and would never break even in the very short one-week run each play is granted in the fall and spring. In addition, the Theatre cannot rely on the absolute availability of all member at all times, since all of them must give priority to their full-time careers. Such mundane necessities were important factors in the genesis of Potitt's one-act plays, which take into full account the potential and the needs of his specific Theatre: a small cast and economy of decor, resulting nevertheless in good theatre. These are plays that register the absurdities of daily life, castigate with irony and satire human situations, exaggerate them in order to uncover the fragility and hollowness of human relations, without turning into tragedy. But the possibility of such a turnabout is omnipresent and gives rise to reflection despite the plays' comic effectiveness. This critical view of social life is tyhe common foundation for all of Potitt's one-act dramas. The play Der Haarschnitt (The Haircut) was first performed in 1973, followed in 1975 by Die Wand (The Wall) under the title Freizeitgestaltung (Shaping One's Spare Time). In 1f987 The German Theatre included the one-act farce Die Souffleuse (The female Prompter) in its spring production."
